Xue Di

Xue Di was born in Beijing in 1957. He is the author of three books of poetry and one book of criticism on contemporary Chinese poetry in Chinese, and a book in translation from English to Chinese entitled A View Along the Running Edge , ( Yefief World Editions, 2004 ). In English translation, he has published three full length books, Zone , ( Yefief World Editions, 2004 ), An Ordinary Day (Alice James Books, 2002) and Heart Into Soil (Burning Deck Press & Lost Roads Publishers, 1998) and four chapbooks, Forgive , (Blue Light Press, 2004), Cat's Eye in a Splintered Mirror , (West Town Press, 2004), Circumstances (Duration Press, 2000) and Flames (Paradigm Press, 2000, 1995). His work has also appeared in 30 Chinese language anthologies, two of which he was editor, and in American journals such as American Letters & Commentary, Tyuonyi, Bomb , Hanging Loose, Manoa among others, and anthologies, New Generation: Poems from China Today , One Score More: The Second 20 Years of Burning Deck, 1981-2001 , This Same Sky , among others. Xue Di's work has been translated into English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, and Japanese. Since shortly after the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989, he has been a fellow in Brown University 's Freedom to Write Program in Providence , Rhode Island . He has given numerous readings in the United States , Europe and the People's Republic of China . Xue Di is a recipient of the Artemis A. Joukowsky Fellowship, Brown University , Providence , Rhode Island and a two-time recipient of the Hellman/Hammett Award, sponsored by Human Rights Watch.
